SMALL CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR (Less than R10m)

This award looks to recognize a young achiever in our industry. The category is dedicated to, but not restricted to, the Generation for Change (G4C) movement within Constructing Excellence.  G4C aims to be the organization that is the driving force for industry change, through the development and connection of the future industry leaders.

Judges are looking for the person that best demonstrates a positive impact on their peers, their organization and the wider industry, against current G4C priority areas.

Our winner will be an exemplary future leader, evidenced by:

Their personal achievements within their organization

Their contribution toward furthering G4C themes of people development, sustainability and innovation

Their personal achievements and exemplar behaviors in the wider industry and their community

The added value their contribution brings to Client’s projects

Their potential to be a future industry leader

Training Excellence Award

This award is for contractors who can demonstrate a positive and progressive approach to training and developing staff in the calendar year 2017. 

Entrants will be assessed on the outcomes of their training initiatives, as well as the innovation shown in developing new training methods and the time allocated to training. Judges will also be looking for strong leadership and commitment to training, as well as evidence of an embedded culture of training.

This award highlights overall business performance in training, rather than one specific project or initiative, although examples of these should be included to support your entry.

This award is not for associations or agencies. 

SUSTAINABILITY AWARD

Judges are looking for organizations, or projects, whose achievements in relation to the legacy their work leaves have made a positive impact on society and demonstrated best practice in triple bottom line effects and social value.

Exemplary sustainability legacies will be evidenced by:

 

Reduction in greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide emissions through design and construction measures, leading to reductions both in the build and operation phases of assets

Waste and carbon emissions reduction during construction, through design and construction innovation

Achievements affecting the long-term impact on social, economic and environmental aspects associated with the work

Construction having a social value impact on its neighboring business, residential, educational and voluntary communities so that the industry’s image is improved

Assets which evidence their performance matches or exceeds the design modelling and ratings

    Sustainable Contractor of the Year

    This award is for contractors of any size who can demonstrate their company commitment to the low-carbon agenda, for whom sustainability is a top priority and forms a central part of the company culture in the calendar year 2017.
    Sustainability is defined as the continued assessment of impact on the local environment, a commitment to low carbon, the use and re-use of resources and adherence to regulation, as well as a commitment to improve the communities in which construction occurs. 
    You will be able to demonstrate that as a result of your firm’s commitment to sustainability, there have been benefits at a project, local, regional or national level. 
    This award is not for associations or agencies. 

    Judges will be looking for evidence, in the calendar year 2017, of: 

    • The outcomes of sustainability initiatives
    • Innovation in sustainability
    • A company culture with sustainability deeply embedded throughout the workforce
    • Actions taken to reduce company carbon footprint with evidence of success
    • Commitment to sustainability on projects
    • How you have extended/shared your sustainability culture and commitment with clients or supply chain partners
    • A stand-out performance that particularly merits this award – the ‘wow’ factor
    Project of the Year (over R500m)

    Open to all SA projects with a budget value over R500m that achieved practical completion, or equivalent, during the calendar year 2017.
    The project awards are for construction teams who deserve recognition for their high standard of work, adherence to budget and client satisfaction in a healthy and safe working environment. This category celebrates the best of SA construction, and the entries should reflect that.
    The entry should have one main proposer but please also provide details of other relevant companies involved (as a minimum, the entry should contain details of the client, the principal contractor and a specialist contractor). Larger projects in particular will be expected to reflect the size of the team.
    Each application should be accompanied by three different photographs of the completed project, and may be supported by up to three different photographs of the project under construction.

    The judges will be looking for evidence, in the calendar year 2017, of: 

    • Client satisfaction
    • Project excellence
    • Health and safety performance
    • Sustainability
    • Completion on time / early and to budget
    • Supply chain best practice
    • Innovation
    • Any other stand-out performance that particularly merits this award – the ‘wow’ factor
      Best Property Developer

      This category seeks to recognise the most outstanding property developer in the calendar year 2017.

      Judges will be looking for evidence of successful strategy, high-quality schemes and a commitment to local planning, innovation and sustainability.

      Entrants should supply turnover and profit figures for the last two years of filed accounts and a copy of the most recent annual report if it exists.

      The judges will be looking for evidence, in the calendar year 2017, of:
       

      • Outstanding projects
      • Clear strategy and vision
      • Innovation
      • Sustainability
      • Health and safety
      • Good workforce culture, with training and development
      • A stand-out performance that particularly merits this award – the ‘wow’ factor 
            South African Contractor of the Year

            This category seeks to recognise the most outstanding main contractor in SA construction industry in the calendar year 2017.

            Judges will be looking for evidence of contribution to brilliant projects, innovation, quality of work and a forward-looking approach to the industry. 
             
            Entrants should supply turnover and profit figures for the last two years of filed accounts and a copy of the most recent annual report if it exists.

            The judges will be looking for evidence, in the calendar year 2017, of:

            • Outstanding projects 
            • Clear strategy and vision
            • Strong client and supply chain relationships 
            • Innovation
            • Sustainability
            • Health, safety and wellbeing
            • Excellent workforce culture, including training and development
            • Any other stand-out performance that particularly merits this award – the ‘wow’ factor
                    Construction Consultancy of the Year

                    This category is open to any type of construction consultancy, including quantity surveyors, cost consultants, engineering consultants and project managers. The award reflects the overall performance of a company in the calendar year 2017.

                    Judges will be looking for evidence of business success and development, and the quality of work the consultancy does for clients – that outperforms its peers. 

                    Entrants should supply turnover and profit figures for the last two years of filed accounts and a copy of the most recent annual report if it exists.

                    Judges will be looking for evidence, in the calendar year 2017, of:

                    • Your contribution to exemplar projects 
                    • Action to reduce carbon footprint and increase sustainability
                    • A good workforce culture, including training and development
                    • Clear strategy and vision
                    • Innovation
                    • Relationship with supply chain
                    • Commitment to diversity of workforce 
                    • Any other stand-out performance that particularly merits this award – the ‘wow’ factor
                                Best Workers Union of the Year

                                This award celebrates the outstanding contribution made by union for its members and workers, whether through radical innovation or sheer persistence.

                                Sub-Contractor of the Year

                                This award is open to sub-contractors of all sizes that can best demonstrate excellence over the past 12 months. Judges will be looking for evidence of commercial strength and development, and the quality of work carried out.
                                e awarded to an in-house client project manager; or to an independent project manager working for a consultancy firm.

                                Residential Project of the Year

                                This award recognises excellence in the construction of a residential property on the island of Ireland. These properties may be a new build or an extension to any existing property and can include RDP houses, single houses, housing developments, housing estates, apartments and social housing.

                                Tourism & Hospitality Project of the Year

                                This award recognises excellence in the construction of a tourism or hospitality building. This may include any building or development in the tourism, visitor or leisure space, including visitor centres, hotels, swimming pools, golf clubs, stadiums, pubs, restaurants and night clubs. The sector also includes cinemas, theatres, bowling centres, health clubs and spas, conference centres, museums, galleries, holiday centres, casinos, sports complexes and even zoos!

                                Education Project of the Year

                                This award recognises excellence in the construction of an Education facility on the Republic of SA. This includes new builds and extensions for pre-schools, schools, universities and colleges, either public or private.

                                Green Project of the Year

                                This award recognises the most interesting sustainable building project completed in SA over the past 12 months. This category is open to all residential or non-residential buildings or developments – including houses, apartments, offices, health, educational, leisure, hotels, industrial and public sector.

                                WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION AWARD

                                The impact and influence of women on the construction industry is becoming more and more important. This award celebrates the outstanding contribution to paving the way for women in the construction industry.

                                        DISTINGUISED EXCELLENCE HUMAN SETTLEMENT AWARD

                                        Judges are looking for an organization leading the way on developing their existing human assets and attracting new entrants to the industry.

                                        Exemplary people developers will be able show judges how they:

                                        Invest in training and upskilling their workforce

                                        Encourage new talent and entrants, possibly working in collaboration with other organizations

                                        Encourage their employees and supply chain to be more aware of local communities, the environment and the image of the industry

                                        Put equal opportunity and diversity in the mix for their development planning

                                        Can evidence a development strategy with monitoring and measurement of achievement

                                        Health & Safety Excellence Award

                                        This award is for contractors that can demonstrate outstanding performance in health and safety during the calendar year of 2017. 

                                        The judges will evaluate your company’s wider commitment to health and safety and the work done to achieve exemplary standards. This award highlights overall business performance in health and safety, rather than one specific project or initiative, although examples of these should be included to support your entry.

                                        Judges will look for evidence of innovation in health and safety, specific initiatives designed to embed a positive health and safety culture, the communication of safety messages and the results/improvements this has led to within the business. Entrants must also demonstrate how the health and wellbeing of staff has been considered.

                                        Judges will be looking for evidence of some, or all, of the following in the calendar year 2017:

                                        • The outcomes of H&S and wellbeing initiatives
                                        • Commitment to staff training 
                                        • Meeting or exceeding client demands on H&S and wellbeing
                                        • Innovation in H&S and an embedded culture of H&S within your business
                                        • Commitment to improving employee mental health and wellbeing
                                        • Exemplar projects that demonstrate the highest standards of H&S and wellbeing
                                        • How you have extended your H&S culture and commitment up and/or down your supply chain
                                        • A stand-out performance that particularly merits this award – the ‘wow’ factor
                                        ONSITE CONSTRUCTION SECURITY COMPANY OF THE YEAR

                                        This award is for contractors – however large or small – that can demonstrate outstanding performance onsite security including Access Control Product, Security Project or Installation, Access Control, Biometric system , CCTV and site security guarding

                                          Innovation of the Year

                                          This category is open to any company that can show excellence in the way it has used technical, systems or process innovation within its own business in the calendar year 2017 – to improve its performance and service to clients.

                                          Entries should focus on at least one example of specific innovation. This could be a new trailblazing safety, employment or HR initiative, a new product that exemplifies innovative design and function, or equally a ground-breaking process that changed how a project was delivered.

                                          The innovation could be site or office based, and entrants should be clear whether the innovation lies in performance, cost, health & safety, reliability or other factors and provide supporting evidence.

                                          Please note: technological innovations should be entered into the Best Use of Technology category.

                                          The judges will also score on how innovation is fostered and encouraged across the business, and will look for evidence, in the calendar year 2017, of:

                                          • Company commitment to innovation
                                          • Outcomes of innovation
                                          • Application of R&D findings
                                          • Evidence of company/project improvement as result of innovation
                                          • Any other stand-out performance that particularly merits this award – the ‘wow’ factor
                                              BIM Excellence Award

                                              This award is to recognise outstanding performance in the use of and commitment to building information modelling. 
                                              Entries are encouraged from organisations and project teams who have used BIM in the calendar year 2017 to improve their projects, businesses relationships and overall performance.  The entry should have one main proposer but please also provide details of other relevant companies involved (as a minimum, the entry should contain details of the client and the principal contractor.

                                              The judges will be looking for evidence, in the calendar year 2017, of:

                                              • Integrated supply chain working through the application of BIM
                                              • Efficiencies made as a result of BIM
                                              • Improved performance through use of BIM
                                              • Project excellence / client satisfaction achieved through BIM
                                              • BIM embedded in company culture
                                              • Innovation in design/software/collaboration
                                              • Evidence it is Level 2 ready or moving beyond this
                                              • A stand-out performance that particularly merits this award – the ‘wow’ factor
                                                        Supply Chain Excellence

                                                        This award is to recognise outstanding performance by a supply chain, where all partners have worked together towards common goals and can demonstrate improved performance. 

                                                        This can be demonstrated on a specific project, or as part of a partnership, framework or joint venture, and should highlight how supply chain collaboration and integration has resulted in a better outcome for all parties.
                                                         
                                                        The entry should have one main proposer, but provide details of other relevant companies involved. As a minimum the entry should contain details of the client or clients, principal contractor and a specialist contractor.

                                                        Judges will be looking for evidence of, as applicable:

                                                        • Common goals and culture on health and safety, sustainability and training
                                                        • Evidence that collaboration through the supply chain led to better outcomes
                                                        • Fair payment terms and practices
                                                        • Supply chain risk management
                                                        • Early contractor involvement
                                                        • Innovation
                                                        • Outstanding projects
                                                        • A stand-out performance that particularly merits this award – the ‘wow’ factor
                                                                      Construction Industry Leader 2018

                                                                      This award recognises the senior individual who has made a significant contribution to the construction profession in South Africa.
                                                                      You cannot formally enter this category. The recipient of this award will be decided after due consideration.

                                                                                      Commercial Project of the Year

                                                                                      This award recognises excellence in a construction project for offices and business spaces which are not retail in nature. This may include office blocks, service centres, airport terminal buildings, farming, warehousing and can be either a new build or an extension to an existing building.

                                                                                                      Retail Project of the Year

                                                                                                      This award recognises excellence in the construction of a retail project. This may include shops or any form of retail developments, where the primary purpose is direct to customer services. Retail covers all type of shopping facility from stand-alone individual shop units to large shopping malls and supermarkets. Bank premises and similar high street outlets are also classified as retail, as are petrol forecourts.

                                                                                                                      Health Project of the Year

                                                                                                                      This award recognises excellence in the construction of a Healthcare facility. This includes Hospitals, Dental Practices, Community Healthcare facilities, Health Centres, Psychiatric Hospitals, Healthcare Laboratories, Day Centres, Mental Health and Community Nursing units.

                                                                                                                                      Industrial Project of the Year

                                                                                                                                      This award recognises excellence in a construction project that is industrial in nature, whether new build or an extension to an existing building. Industrial buildings of all descriptions are eligible – whether they are factories, data centres, mills, laboratories or any other building project relating to industry.

                                                                                                                                                      Excellence in Education & Training

                                                                                                                                                      This award recognises the SA-based third level institution, technical training college or organisation that can best demonstrate excellence in the delivery and development of knowledge or skills in the construction industry.
